Turkey Hat {FREE PATTERN}

I haven't really had time to write up patterns lately. I've been so busy with pre-K, soccer, karate, and dance, while also trying to get Halloween and turkey hat orders out in time for the holidays. Here's a quicky pattern. It's really very easy if you understand crochet patterns and do not need pictures of each step. If you have any questions, jusk ask. Enjoy!

As always, please link back to this post or my Facebook page if you post your hat for sale. Please be sure to credit me for the pattern. Thanks!

Materials: Worsted weight yarn in brown (A), white, black, orange, red, and yellow
H hook unless otherwise noted (4+ size uses G)
Sizes: premie, 0-6mos, 6-24mos, 2-4, child, adult
Note: Ch 1 does NOT count as a stitch.

Each of the curly things is: Chain 21, sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 19. (It will start curling on its own and you can curl it better with your finger.) I did 4 of these for the top. For the one hanging from the nose I did the same thing, but used hdc.
You'll sew the sc curlies to the top of the hat and the hdc curly beside the nose, after the nose is sewn on.

Eyes (make 2):
The black center (make 2): Ch 2, work 5sc in the 1st ch. Join w/ slst to the 1st sc.
The white eye: Chain 3, join w/ slst to 1st ch. Ch 1, work 10 hdc in circle. Join with slst to first hdc. Ch 1, work 2 hdc in each around (20), join with slst to first hdc.
Sew the black part to the white part, and when your hat is finished, sew the eyes to the hat.

Nose:
Chain 3, join w/ slst to 1st ch. Ch 1, work 5sc in circle, join to first sc with slst. Ch 1, work 2sc in each sc around (10), join. Ch 1, sc in each around (10), join. Ch 1,*sc, 2sc* around (15), join. Ch 1, sc in each around (15).
You'll sew the nose onto the hat under the eyes.

For the braids (I used orange, brown, and yellow), do this twice: Cut 9 pieces of yarn about 30" yarn. Fold it in half and feed the folded part through the bottom of the flap (between the last two hdc2tog). Pull the tails through the loop created. Pull tight to secure and then braid. Knot at the end.

How did you attach you nose? It doesn't look like just the flat circle.

Kristin said...

Hi Melissa! You just sew the base onto the hat. I try to loop through each stitch. :) (It's a 3 dimensional nose.)

Can anyone please explain what "Join A" means?? I've gotten all the way through and am stuck here. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Kristin said...

Sorry, I forgot to label the colors. "A" would be your main color yarn, which is brown.

Thanks for linking up, Tamara! Cute blog!

Sorry if this seems dumb but am I fastening off at the end of the first ear flap and then starting on the other side?

Kristin said...

Yes ma'am. :)

Thank you very much!! And thank you for sharing this pattern. I looked everywhere for a cute pattern and could not find one!!

So cute! I have a question on the eyes. Do you make the black parts separate from the white part? I don't see anywhere where it says to join the white to the black. And if they are separate, do you just attach the black on top of the white?

Kristin said...

Thanks, I'm glad you like it!

Holly- Yes, attach the black to the white and then attach the eyes to the hat. I will edit now. :)

I just made this for my 7mo old. Thank you so much. I love it!

Is this in British terms? I started making it in US terms and it is way too small...
Can't wait to finish it, though! Super cute!

Kristin said...

No, this is in US terms. Are you doing the beanie in hdc? What size? It should not be too small. I've had it tested dozens of times. ;)

Mine turned out too small too. :p My daughter is 12 mths and the 6-24 mths doesn't fit her. Seems like it would fit a 6 mth max..maybe 6-9. I feel like I might be a tight stitcher, but I crochet a lot and the h hook is my most comfortable. I'm considering going to the next size up or going up a couple hook sizes on that one. 6-24 mths seems like a big age group for one hat though. Anyways..the hat is super cute! ^_^ Thanx for the post!

Nevermine...seems like it might fit my 12 mth ok. :)) Not sure about any bigger than that though..but yay! My little turkey..hehe

Cute, easy to follow pattern! I am not great with hats and this has given me confidence. Thanks for posting. I just made two of these for friends that are doing a 5K on Thanksgiving day.

I'm going to try to whip one up for my 4 month old grandson before Thanksgiving! Wish me luck!

When you get to the second earflap on the adult it says do not fasten off but then it jumps to using orange to single crochet around...I'm confused and don't understand why it says not to fasten off the second ear flap and what are you supposed to do if you don't fasten it off?

Thanks for the pattern!! Question, can you machine wash this?
