BEAK:
Chain 7. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each across (6).
Sc2tog first two sts, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog (4).
Sc2tog twice (2).
Sc2tog (1).
Chain 1, sc around the entire beak. Leave a long tail for sewing onto the hat.
You can use the above picture as a reference for sewing on the eyes (buttons) and beak.
For the braids, do this twice: Cut 9 pieces of blue yarn about 30" yarn. Fold it in half and feed the folded part through the bottom of the flap (between the last two hdc2tog). Pull the tails through the loop created. Pull tight to secure and then braid. Knot at the end.
For the "feathers" on top: Cut 6 pieces of blue yarn about 12" long. Fold it in half and feed it through a space in the top of the hat. Pull the tails through the loop and make the knot tight so that it won't come in done. Trim the ends from the braids and the "feathers" so the yarn ends are even.

This is such a cute pattern! I also appreciate how you have the directions for the different sizes separated out which makes it much easier to make the hat. Would this be ok for a boy? I so have to make it!
Thank you for sharing your pattern.
I love this pattern. I am new to crocheting... I am finished making earflap 1. Do I fasten off my yarn and cut it, then go over to the opposite side and start earflap 2?
Love this hat! I am in the process of making one for my son! I am confused about the feathers on the top. I am not understanding how im supposed to put the ends through the loop after they are fed through the hole.
Thanks for the comments! I have been on vacation, sorry for my delayed response.
Margaret, I think it'd be fine for a boy. :)
Kathie, Yes, you cut your yarn and start the second earflap on the opposite side.
Anonymous, It's done the same way as the braids through the earflaps. Fold the pieces of yarn and feed the folded pieces through a space on the top. Then, pull the ends through the loop that was created with the fold. Pull it tight and you're done. :)
This is such an adorable hat pattern. I am going to try to make one for my grandson. I will make sure I give you credit for the pattern.
Pattie
Can you give me an aprox. size of the buttons you used? Thank you so much it is adorable.
Patty
I am pretty sure they were a half inch in diameter or a tad bit smaller. :)
Reann, yes you are working in a circle.
The ch3, join, creates a circle, and then when you work your hdc's, you are working them into the circle. After your last hdc, you join back to the first hdc with a slst. Each round will make a new circle.
Hope that makes a little better sense. ;) Let me know if you need anything else.
Hola
